Annual Senior’s Day

08 May 2021

Annual Senior’s Day

Annual Seniors Day is a celebration of our Sri Lankan elders living in New South Wales (NSW). Generally, this is a fun filled day with various participation from Sri Lankan seniors with a sumptuous luncheon. Every year we hold this coinciding with the NSW Seniors Week.

In 2021, a Multicultural Seniors Luncheon was an exemplary event with an involvement of Blacktown local Council, Aboriginal Community, Australian seniors and South Asian communities.

2021 Multicultural Annual Seniors’ Luncheon

Holding such an event was an enormous challenge during an uncertain time due to the Covid pandemic.

The most outstanding item was the Aboriginal Smoking Ceremony and a Didgeridoo performance by Jie Pitman who belongs to the Darug, Wiradjuri, Yuin, Kooma&Ngemba Nations. Jie shared his story with his passion to sharing his culture with Western Sydney communities.VIP guests and all other participants were ushered to the hall following the smoking ceremony, which demonstrated “Respect and Connection to the Country”.

Flavour of Ceylon provided a delicious lunch

We have conducted an evaluation of the event and overwhelmingly, the highlight of the day was the Aboriginal smoking ceremony and the multicultural community participation. Many have commented that they have participated in a smoking ceremony for the first time in their life.
